Work, now there is a word that can evoke all sorts of emotion. Surveys show that as much as 75% of the people who have a job believe it is stressful. In this economic environment one of the major stressors people are facing is the uncertainty of their job.  They wake up in the morning wondering if this is the day the company closes its doors or downsizes them out the door. If you haven't already visited the page on Stress Relief, you might want to click over there when you finish here.

These are not the old days when you started working for a company and stayed for 20 years then retired. The job world is a moving target and people tend to move around as well. You may now be facing a new job or the loss of a job and the quest for a new one. Both situations can be stressful and are definitely full of change.

With a new job, you are faced with new time frames, new expectations, new people, and potentially new technology. For many people all that 'newness' can be a bit daunting and fill them with self doubt. "Will I succeed?" Will they like me?" "Will I be able to learn that new system?" It is important to remember that while you do not have control over other people, you do have  control over yourself. How you deal with and respond to change can affect the change itself. Watch the online presentation Understanding Change to find out what can make change easier and lessen your stress. If you are facing learning something new check out How Your Brain Works and Accelerated Learning.

So you lost your job? You are not alone. The first thing you must lock into your brain is that a job is just a job. It is not your life. You still have your life and where there is life there is possibility. Make a plan. Apply for unemployment right away, even if you are confident you will find a job soon. It takes time for unemployment benefits to initiate and the sooner you start them, the sooner they will be available to you--just in case.

Do not mope and pout, or eat, or drink the hurt away. It will only hurt more. Read Do's and Don'ts of Unemployment - Staying Positive. Take account of your resources, sell things you don't need, stop spending, and start cost cutting. Things are just things. Spiff up your resume, get your references in order, and hit the job websites as well as your local industries. The worst they can ever say is 'no' and that won't kill you.

Check with local agencies to see what might be available to you locally in the way of support or assistance.

Do you have a hobby that you might parlay into part-time work or information you might sell online? Getting a fully functional website up and running is easier today than it has ever been.

Are you a victim of the Meeting Monster?

Meetings devour an unrealistic number of work hours and they are often wasted hours because nothing is accomplished.

If the Meeting Monster is gobbling up your day, stopping all over your lunch hour, or nibbling away at your personal time, tame him! Watch the online presentation Taming The Meeting Monster
