Some stress is good for the body and it is called eustress. Eustress is a part of learning and new experiences, things that make us work mentally and/or physically. It is the stress that comes when we challeng ourselves. It can give us the feeling of success or accomplishment when we 'reach the other side.' Bad stress, distress, is the kind that cannot be surmounted or overcome. It is persistent, chronic and no relief can be achieved. It can have negative impact on both the physical and mental state of an individual. Physical effects might include insomnia or ulcers. The mental effect is often depression, which in turn has a physical impact. In our society the bad stress, distress, has become a constant companion. It can tax our immune system, cause weight gain, contribute to depression, and at the very least it depletes our energies. The stress over economics and work is at an all time high. More and more companies are requiring more and more from their employees in the way of output and hours, leaving less and less time for people to address health and well-being and manage their stress or engage in activities that create eustress. So, what can you do? The obvious answer is to remove the distress. Easier said than done, right? We strongly recommend you watch the online presentations Managing Change and Managing Conflict because these two circumstances, change and conflict, are responsible for a huge amount of stress. Most individuals never receive any training to deal with either circumstance. Yet, by learning ways to cope with change and conflict, you may be able to eliminate some of your distress all together. If you can't remove the distress, you must find ways to manage and offset it. Physical activity is an excellent means of managing stress. Sometimes just taking a walk or playing a game of tennis will drain away some of your distress. Physical activity initiates the release of chemicals in the brain and body, chemicals that enhance our sense of well-being, such as serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine, and endorphins. Additionally, if we walk that mile or give our best effort in that game of tennis, whether we win or not, we can create a bit of eustress with the right attitude. In the reverse, if we deal with our distress by sitting in front of the television for hours, pigging out on comfort foods, or drowning our sorrows in too many beers or glasses of wine, we only enhance the negative effects of our distress. |
